International Students

At St. John’s we offer a Homestay Boarding experience to students from around the world. As a tier 4 licence provider, we encourage applications from strong academic, international students to make up the small cohort of overseas candidates who join the 500 local Londoners. Our international students enjoy a real London school experience, whilst the positive integration of our multinational cohort ensures that all our students emerge as insightful Global Citizens.

Academic Excellence

St John’s has consistently been one of the top academic schools in London league tables for more than 19 years. Our GCSE results have placed us consistently in the Top 2 schools in the Borough and at A level, our A/A* grades for our international students have consistently ranged between 95 to 100%.

How do we achieve our outstanding results?

Curriculum Time

St John’s has its own unique style of delivery of the curriculum.  We offer:

The Core –  class subject time of 5 hours per week in each subject.

Seminar – smaller groups exploring the content of the Core in both depth and practice.

Tutorial – 1:1 personalised study time with the subject teacher

Past paper practice groups – in person & online evening and weekend sessions focussed on the questions and techniques of the Examination Board.

In total, this results in double the normal curriculum time expected at A level. We believe this model is responsible for the outstanding results achieved by our students consistently over time.

English Language

For international students for whom English is not their first language, we provide English classes to support their preparation for obtaining the IELTS qualification.

Curriculum Delivery - Teachers

We recognise the importance of high-quality teaching.  Our teaching staff are recruited as experienced experts in their subject area.  Their understanding of the Examination Boards and therefore, their ability to prepare the students for the final examination, is exceptional.  By investing in high quality staff, our students benefit hugely from their teachers’ skills, knowledge and understanding.

Curriculum – what we offer our International Students

Our courses are highly academic and we require very high standards from our applicants.  Entry to our ‘A’ level courses is offered to international students with outstanding  prior achievements.  In addition, students are required to take a St. John’s International Entrance Test including subject tests based on ‘A’ level choices.

A strong IELTS score (normally 6.0 or above) would be required.

Finally, an interview with a Senior Leader would determine if an offer is to be made.

We offer:

Two Year ‘A’ level course – normally 3 or 4 subjects

Destinations

Our International students aim for the worlds top universities.  In recent years  these include:

In the UK:  Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, LSE (London School of Economics), University College London. Kings College London, Warwick, Bristol, Edinburgh, among other Russell Group Universities.

The School provides excellent UK and International University application support. Most of our students apply to UK universities and UCAS guidance is in place to assist them with this.  In addition, we provide a comprehensive programme of preparation for the SAT test and college applications to the US and other destinations.

Career and Personal Goals

Our tutors work with our international students providing individualised careers guidance.  This is a particular challenge when living away from home and our students are guided through the University Application process underpinned by a personal development programme. This ensures that the correct skills are developed for each individual course and for university life in general.  Work experience is also organised for our international students when the University course requires this, such as Medicine.

Pastoral Care

Our Pastoral Team reach out to our international students to ensure that they are fully prepared to get the best out of their time here.  This outstanding care continues throughout the duration of study and beyond.

Boarding / homestay

We take great pride in our truly London, multi-cultural community.  Our international students get the opportunity to make friends with peers from around the world as well as the local day pupils.  This is a unique aspect of a Home Stay boarding experience and is much enjoyed by both local and international students alike.

Students who choose Home Stay are looked after by our very experienced Home Stay staff, who work with the Host Families to create a home-from-home experience.

At St. John’s we recognise the need to ensure that the weekend is a good experience for our International Students.  We provide a programme of organised events to support our boarders at the weekend to ensure they have a balance in their lives.  With London on our doorstep, it is possible to find things for everyone to enjoy.
